Registrations are now open for the upcoming Artist Workshop “Circussing and Circography”, led by artist and choreographer Alexander Vantournhout, which will take place from March 9 to 13 at La Central del Circ.

This workshop offers a space for reflection and discussion around circus practice: how does circus work today and how could it work? Based on these questions, different ways of understanding and rethinking this artistic language will be explored.

Each day will begin with a morning session of breathing and body exercises. Afterwards, various areas of work will be addressed, such as virtuosity and safety, risk and danger, accidents, and falls. These topics will lead to collective discussions, small presentations, practical proposals, and shared reflection spaces.

In the afternoon, Alexander Vantournhout will share his experience as a creator, focusing on measuring and discovering the singularity of one’s own body, and how this can become the starting point for a creative process. The goal is for each participant to find their own approach and develop their personal practice.

Throughout the week, participants are invited to think about circus in all its breadth, richness, and complexity. Circus offers forms of expression that often go beyond verbal language: ways of understanding ourselves, relating bodies to objects, and establishing connections between human beings.

Alexander Vantournhout

Alexander Vantournhout (Brussels, 1989) trained in cyr wheel and juggling at ESAC (École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque) and in contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels.

His physical language is deeply influenced by a diverse training background and very varied work contexts. At the same time, his practice is defined by two constants: the search for the creative and kinetic potential of physical limitations, and the exploration of the relationship—and its limits—between the performer’s body and the object.

Currently, he is an artist-in-residence at Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER in Ghent, an associate artist at CENTQUATRE in Paris and MAC de Créteil, and a cultural ambassador for the city of Roeselare. He receives support from the BNP Paribas Foundation for the development of his projects and is the founder of the company Not Standing.
